Finding Voice Through Spoken Word: Australian Poetry Slam
There are moments in a school community that stay with you and our recent incursion Skillset Senior College was one of them.
We had the privilege of welcoming Australian Poetry Slam for a powerful workshop and performance experience that brought words to life in the most electric way.
An Unforgettable Performance
The session opened with a live performance from two poetry slam champions whose presence, storytelling and energy immediately captured the room. Their words drew students in from the very first line.
For many of our students, this was more than just a performance. It was an introduction to a new way of communicating, one that is bold, creative and unapologetically authentic.
Stepping Into the Creative Process
Following the performance, our students took part in hands-on workshops designed to unpack the art of spoken word.
Through guided activities, students explored:
- how ideas are shaped into powerful narratives
- the role of rhythm, tone and delivery in storytelling
- ways to draw on personal experiences to create meaning
What stood out most was the level of engagement. Students were curious, reflective and willing to step outside their comfort zones. They asked thoughtful questions, tested ideas and began to see their own voices as something worth sharing.
Australian Poetry Slam’s youth programs focus on empowering young people to express themselves with confidence, creativity and purpose. This aligns strongly with our mission at our school, where we support young people to overcome barriers and find their place in education and beyond.
Across the sessions, students were not just learning about poetry. They were:
- building confidence in self-expression
- exploring identity and perspective
- finding new ways to communicate thoughts and emotions
For some, it was the first time they had seen storytelling presented in a way that felt accessible and relevant to their lives.
Looking Ahead
We are incredibly proud of how our students embraced this opportunity. They showed openness, courage and a genuine willingness to engage. Experiences like this remind us of the importance of creative expression in education. When students are given the space to explore their voice, something powerful happens. They begin to see themselves differently.
We are excited to see how this experience continues to shape our students’ confidence and creativity in the weeks and months ahead.
A huge thank you to Australian Poetry Slam for bringing such energy, inspiration and authenticity to our College!
